I will be moving to Paris this summer to begin graduate school in Paris in September. Although my school program will be taught in English, I still want to learn to speak French as well as possible for everyday living aside from school. During July and August, I would like to do an intensive program of French study in order to prepare. We will be moving to San Diego by end of this year. And I am looking for a private school K-8 or K-12 that offers rigorous academics, French Language Program, Arts, Music, Sports etc in a diverse setting. If they offer the IB program that would be better.

Once someone has decided to start studying a second language such as French, the next big decision is which study materials to use.  There are plenty of solid options available from books to CDs to computer programs.  Another option that many people aren’t aware of or haven’t considered is to download French language programs directly from the internet.

Many people hear “download” and “internet” and begin to worry, but there are many great programs and many great reasons to consider downloading a French language program.  With very few exceptions, there is no reason to reject this route and many reasons to try it.  Security is rarely an issue, but to be on the safe side:  don’t “click here to download” if you have never heard of, or don’t trust the company.  Almost every language program site that has a download is legitimate, but when in doubt, do a bit of research to be sure.

The first reason is convenience.  When doing a download, you don’t need to leave the house, and with a few clicks of the mouse; you can be on the way to learning French.  Thanks to advances in computer and networking technology, it is fast, too.  You could start studying French in just a few minutes after clicking “download now”.  This is a nice benefit since so many people like to have it (whatever “it” may be) now, and here you can.

Generally speaking, a downloadable version of a French language program will be less expensive than the actual physical version.  The reason for this is simple: printing books and CDs costs a lot of money.  But, when all of the information is downloaded to your computer, there is no physical product so the expense is significantly less.

With most programs that you can download, there is easy access to upgrades as well as online support.  If the company has an upgrade or a fix to the product, they can simply email current users and with a few clicks they can have the new information.  Most computer-based language programs also have a good level of online support available to the people who purchased the product.

The ability to give a trial version or trial run of the program is another advantage to the downloaded language product.  Many companies have a “light” version that allows people to try before they buy the whole thing.  This option is not available in other programs, as there is no way of offering a book that has some information and then if you like it, you can buy the rest of the book.

The last advantage to a downloadable French language program is that they employ multimedia to teach, or at least the best programs do.  This means that you can read, hear, and watch the information, which makes it more fun.  When you are having fun and not bored with studying, you will do it more and retain the information better.

Now, if there’s anything that can impress and show off your great intelligence, it’s the ability to speak a foreign language.  The French language is considered one of the most impressive languages to learn.  It is the language of culture and sophistication and is completely iconic. Yet, French is in no way outdated, as it remains at the forefront of good culture and cuisine, and is the international language of democracy.

Several great options exist for learning French.  The French language program that you choose should reflect your own personal learning methods, but there are still some resources that are much more effective than others.

Software programs tend to be very good since they often offer immersion environments in which you can learn the language in a more natural manner.  If you are looking for an enjoyable way of learning, and one where you can go at your own pace, I definitely recommend this option.

Evening classes are the second option for learning French.  These are slightly less flexible, as you tend to be fixed in terms of class times.  You also have to face up to speaking French in front of other people. This can be very exciting for some, but a little nerve-wracking for others.  Learning through evening classes can be quite expensive, too, since the individual classes tend to be pricey, and you will need to take lessons over several semesters to gain any fluency.

Self-teaching yourself with textbooks and guides is a lot more economical, but it is also the least effective method.  Another flaw with these books is that they are a little one-dimensional and only offer a grammatical guide with a little vocabulary in between.  Since you can’t practice the spoken language and verify the pronunciations, this is not a very effective French language program.  This is why most textbooks end up on eBay or in a garage sale.

The most comprehensive French language program has to be a good online course.  Since the online courses are interactive they are much more fun than a dry textbook, and you will get practice both speaking French and listening to it.  They are also relevant and well put-together to ensure a logical and methodical progression through the language.  Plus, these programs are well suited to anyone interested in learning since they are so flexible and able to fit into your day comfortably.

The best way of learning a new language is through short lessons reviewed frequently, in a methodical manner.  This requires you to continually come back to the language to keep learning bit by bit.  Thankfully, a good online French language program will make this easy and fun, and before you know it you will not only be speaking French, but you’ll be hooked on learning!
